How do INVEGA SUSTENNA, INVEGA TRINZA, or INVEGA HAFYERA work?

Last Updated: 07/25/2024

SUMMARY

How do INVEGA SUSTENNA, INVEGA TRINZA, or INVEGA HAFYERA work?

INVEGA SUSTENNA, INVEGA TRINZA, and INVEGA HAFYERA are given as injections by your healthcare provider into the muscle (intramuscularly).1-3

They each have the same ingredient, paliperidone palmitate, which your body will metabolize or break down over time into the active medication, paliperidone. However, each product is designed, so that the active medication is gradually released into the body over different periods of time.

  • The active medication in INVEGA SUSTENNA is gradually released into the body over 1 month (after receiving 2 starting doses administered 1 week apart).1
  • The active medication in INVEGA TRINZA is gradually released into the body over 3 months (after being adequately treated with INVEGA SUSTENNA for at least 4 months).2
  • The active medication in INVEGA HAFYERA is gradually released into the body over 6 months (after being adequately treated with INVEGA SUSTENNA for at least 4 months or INVEGA TRINZA for one 3-month cycle).3

How paliperidone works in the body (sometimes called the mechanism of action) is unclear. However, these medicines are believed to act by blocking certain types of receptors within the brain for the neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin.1-3
