TREATMENT OF A YEAST INFECTION

- Talk to your healthcare provider right away if you use an over-the-counter antifungal medication and your symptoms do not go away.1
WAYS TO HELP PREVENT A YEAST INFECTION
- Wearing tight, poorly ventilated clothing and underwear also can contribute to yeast infections. Women who get four or more (recurring) yeast infections in a year should work with their healthcare provider to find out possible underlying causes.2
- To reduce your risk of vaginal yeast infection:2,3
- Do not douche.
- Do not use scented feminine products, including bubble bath, sprays, pads, and tampons.
- Change tampons, pads, and panty liners often.
- After using the bathroom, always wipe from front to back.
- Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting pants or skirts.
- Avoid tight-fitting underwear or pantyhose.
- Immediately change out of wet clothes, such as swimsuits or workout attire.
- Stay out of hot tubs or very hot baths.
- Avoid unnecessary antibiotic use, such as for colds or other viral infections. Check with your healthcare provider.
- Frequent bathing and washing/changing your clothes are recommended, especially during hot weather or after sweating.3
- Scientists do not know why fungal infections develop in some individuals and not others. Studies suggest that eating eight ounces of yogurt daily can help prevent infection; however, more research still needs to be done to say for sure if yogurt or other probiotics can prevent or treat vaginal yeast infections. If you think you have a yeast infection, see your healthcare provider or nurse to make sure before taking any over-the-counter medicine.2
