Summary
- XARELTO® is not approved for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention for long-distance travel.
- There is limited evidence related to VTE prevention for long-distance travelers. The use of anticoagulants is not recommended.1
ACCP Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines1
In the oral anticoagulant therapy clinical practice guidelines, the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) provided recommendations on VTE prevention for long-distance travelers.
- Frequent ambulation, calf muscle exercise, or sitting in an aisle seat if feasible for long-distance travelers at increased risk of VTE. This increased risk includes previous VTE, recent surgery or trauma, active malignancy, pregnancy, estrogen use, advanced age, limited mobility, severe obesity, or known thrombophilic disorder. (Grade 2C)
- The use of properly fitted, below-knee graduated compression stockings (GCS) providing 15 to 30 mm Hg of pressure at the ankle during travel for long-distance travelers at increased risk of VTE. For all other long-distance travelers, the use of GCS is not recommended. (Grade 2C)
- The use of aspirin or anticoagulants to prevent VTE is not recommended for long-distance travelers. (Grade 2C)
