Culturally Conscious Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Toolkit

About

This toolkit was developed with a steering committee made up of two IBD specialists, a person living with IBD, and a leader of an IBD patient advocacy group.

Additionally, input was obtained from groups of individuals with IBD throughout the development process.

This toolkit is based solely on information available at the time it was updated.

Janssen Scientific Affairs, LLC provided financial sponsorship for this toolkit. They were not members of the steering committee. The steering committee approved the suggested edits made by Janssen Scientific Affairs, LLC to provide accuracy and balance.

Overview

This toolkit provides a comprehensive guide to culturally conscious care for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to help promote effective communication and equitable treatment.

Key Features:

  • Bridging of cultural gaps between healthcare providers (HCPs) and patients.
  • Coverage of cultural IBD care, health beliefs, language, and health literacy.
  • Fostering of open dialogue, enhancing care equity, and improving health outcomes for diverse IBD-affected populations.
  • Promotion of understanding, trust, and improved health for all.

Objectives:

  • Equip healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills to deliver culturally conscious care.
  • Improve HCP-patient communication through cross-cultural skills, addressing language barriers, and building trust.

Introduction

Although HCPs have IBD treatment expertise, patients can better explain what is going on in their own lives. Understanding their social identity, life experiences, values, perceptions, and communications is critical to providing appropriate care.

HCPs can do this by providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS), which includes practicing culturally conscious care through competency and humility.

  • Cultural competency1 refers to the developmental process in which one gains the awareness, knowledge, and skills to work and communicate effectively in cross-cultural situations.
  • Cultural humility1 refers to the reflective process of understanding one’s biases and privileges, managing power imbalances, and maintaining a stance that is open to others in relation to aspects of their cultural identity that are most important to them.

When treating patients with IBD, understanding and respecting diverse cultural backgrounds is essential for providing effective and patient-centered care. This tool kit provides information, tools, and resources on the following topics to help enable HCPs in providing culturally competent and linguistically appropriate care to patients with IBD.
